Quality Help at Home for Seniors

When someone you love is diagnosed with a debilitating condition, or is just no longer able to care for themselves it can be mentally stressful. You want to help, but sometimes knowing the correct steps to take is difficult. It can be puzzling to know how to best meet the needs of the person. However, following a few simple steps might help you as well as the patient deal with the situation better.

Listen

Encourage the person to express their feelings to you about their condition. Listen and show empathy to what they are saying. Sometimes the situation might be difficult for you to hear, but most people just want to know and feel as if they will not have to go through the process alone.

Organize

Offer to help the person organize their home, bills, and medical information. Know the contact information of their medical providers. It is also important to familiarize yourself with their medications and the proper dosages. Become an advocate for the person. There most likely will be times when the person will need for someone to speak for them and be knowledgeable on their situation.

Utilize Support Groups

If the person is going through a difficult time accepting their current situation, seek support groups where they can share their feelings, and meet other people going through the same thing. Respect when the person just wants to be alone. Sometimes it is necessary for a person to be alone to reflect on their life and how they plan to cope with their condition.

Family Caregivers/Home Health Services

Individuals going through medical issues often need someone to help them out; this is often true for aging seniors living on their own. Offer to help the person with household chores such as cooking, cleaning, laundry and light errands. Families benefit greatly from bringing in professional home care aides to help with this type of care for their loved one.
